The family's links to the area began with Admiral Sir William Cornwallis, a renowned naval commander who settled at Newlands Manor in Milford in 1800.
Upon the Admiral's death in 1819, his fortune and the Newlands estate were left in trust to Captain Whitby's daughter, Theresa.
It was Theresa's son, William Cornwallis-West, who inherited the estate and, in 1895, officially adopted the hyphenated surname of Cornwallis-West.
