Shaare Zion (pictured in 1995) started as a small congregation in the 1940s. It is the largest Syrian synagogue in New York, and sits on a busy street in the neighborhood of Gravesend in Brooklyn. The synagogue’s letter comes weeks before New York City’s mayoral election on November 4. Nor does it tell congregants what party to register with, or who to vote for or against. Shaare Zion is the largest Syrian synagogue in New York City, and an important and influential part of the Sephardic Jewish community.
