NJ Transit officials demanded that the two top officials of a union representing locomotive engineers repay $10,000 in pay for not working the days around contract talks prior to a May strike. A letter obtained by NJ.com, sent from NJ Transit to Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLE&T) General Chairman Tom Haas Jr. says Haas and Vice Chairman Donald Mellhorn inappropriately submitted timecards for meetings with the NJ Transit senior leadership to negotiate the recent union contract dispute. The letter also warned other engineers to stop last minute call-outs that they weren’t coming to work. That caused the agency to cancel 172 trains last month because no one was available to operate them.
