Look no further than the winter of 2022-23 at Seacliff and New Brighton state beaches for a glimpse of what has experts concerned. More than 300 community members attended a hybrid meeting at Cabrillo College Sept. 11 to unpack the Recovery and Resilience at Seacliff and New Brighton State Beaches study produced by California State Parks in collaboration with local operating partner Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks and Parks California. Chris Spohrer, State Parks Santa Cruz district superintendent, began the hourlong affair by emphasizing that when it comes to the ongoing recovery effort, tradeoffs are necessary. Adaptation scenariosThe study, ordered in May 2023, honed in on five locations: New Brighton State Beach, Seacliff State Beach day-use area, Seacliff’s RV campground area, the Rio Del Mar Esplanade and the southern beach region known as Platforms. “Most of the park facilities at Seacliff State Beach are vulnerable to coastal hazards,” said Jordan Burgess, State Parks deputy district superintendent in Santa Cruz.
