MADISON, Wis. – A group of three Wisconsin Republican lawmakers have authored the latest push to legalize medical marijuana in the state. State Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk), Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) and Assemblyman Patrick Snyder (R-Weston) are co-authors of the legislation introduced September 29 by Felzkowski. The bill is the second attempt in as many years by Wisconsin Republicans to legalize medical marijuana in the state; in 2024, Republicans introduced a measure that would have made medical marijuana available only to severely ill people with chronic diseases such as cancer from one of only five state-run dispensaries. That measure faced opposition from Senate Republicans who objected to the state-run dispensary stipulation, and the bill never progressed through Madison. As of 2025, 40 US states have legalized medical marijuana; according to a January 2024 Marqutte University Law School poll, 86% of respondents said the use of marijuana for medical purposes with a doctor’s prescription should be made legal, with 10% opposed.
