The Novato City Council has adopted the 2030 climate plan, a roadmap to lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Novato’s goal is to reduce emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and 85% below 1990 levels by 2045. The 1990 emissions level is estimated to be more than 300,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The inventory shows where there are opportunities to reduce emissions, according to Christine O’Rourke, sustainability coordinator for the Marin Climate and Energy Partnership. Diverting organic waste from landfills to compost programs could reduce emissions by 5,856 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
