New York’s largest teachers union is calling on the state’s public power agency to massively scale up renewable energy projects across New York. The New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution urging the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build at least 15 gigawatts of public renewables by 2030. “This shows how to challenge the federal government’s effort to reverse New York State’s clean energy momentum,” said James Davis, president of PSC-CUNY, which represents CUNY faculty and staff. “Union activism is critical for climate protection.”Earlier this year, NYPA updated its strategic plan under the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA), doubling its renewable buildout target from 3.3GW to 7GW. The Public Power NY coalition applauded the NYSUT resolution, calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to back the full 15GW plan.
