Powys County Council is proposing to introduce a 30mph speed limit along Llanidloes Road between the NPTC college campus and The Hafren theatre, and the Newtown bypass.
Powys County Council anticipates that the proposed speed limit will improve safety, reduce traffic emissions and noise, and encourage a “mode shift from motorised vehicle to active travel modes for shorter journeys within the local community”.
The council added that the proposal will affect residents, businesses, visitors and traffic accessing and passing through Newtown.
The council's cabinet member for a greener Powys, Cllr Jackie Charlton, will be asked to authorise traffic officers to begin the process of reducing the speed limit on Friday, October 3.
The documents add: "The start and end points of the new 30mph speed limit will be commensurate with the points where the existing 30mph speed limits currently end by the college campus and the bypass roundabout."
