The Farmers’ Union of Wales told its members to be extremely vigilant after two cases of Bluetongue virus (BTV-3) were confirmed in Wales. There were warnings in June that restrictions on cattle crossing the border placed an "impossible burden" on farmers. Gerwyn Williams, FUW Animal Health and Welfare committee chair, said: “It is disappointing that Bluetongue virus has now reached Wales. Animals infected with Bluetongue become lethargic and develop crusting and erosions around their nostrils. “It is important to note that the Bluetongue Virus does not affect people, or the safety of meat and dairy products."
