Chowan edges Shorter in conference opener Published 8:43 am Monday, September 29, 2025Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...ROME, GA. – Chowan quarterback Maurice Smith scored on a one-yard run with 4:09 remaining, rallying the Hawks to a 30-29 come-from-behind victory over Shorter University here Saturday in the Conference Carolinas football opener for both teams. In a back-and-forth game, Shorter reclaimed the lead at 29-23 on Lan McCray’s two yard TD run with 7:23 remaining, Chowan launched what proved to be the game-winning drive at their own 25 yardline. Smith scored four plays later and Jack Beyo booted the all-important PAT, handing the lead back to Chowan at 30-29. Jeb Walls handed the lead (14-7) back to Shorter with his two-yard TD run at the 6-minute mark of the second period. Shorter answered with an eight-play drive, capped by a 20-yard TD run by Walls as the home team reclaimed the lead at 21-14.
