Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection, which occurs when a person's immune system overreacts and begins to damage its own tissues and organs. Levi's parents were informed by doctors that he would need to undergo surgery to amputate both of his legs below the knee, an operation he had two days before his 21st birthday. As sepsis is caused by a dysregulated response to infection, it is not rare for young patients to develop sepsis.
