His remarkable 2021 debut, The Clearing, was an inquiry into, as Ellis puts it, “the intersection of blackness, music, and disabled speech.” Subsequent projects have looked to medieval religious traditions like compline and vespers, and he’s done an ongoing series of sonic fountains – immersive soundscapes for sax and electronics. His latest project is Vesper Sparrow, and it seems to combine elements of all of Ellis’s previous works. It includes this instrumental piece called “Black-throated Sparrow.” JJJJJerome Ellis performs Oct. 3 at Roulette in Brooklyn.
