The Federal Government has rejected allegations that Nigeria is experiencing a “religious genocide,” insisting that the widespread insecurity in the country stems from terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes rather than faith-based persecution. “Conflicts in Nigeria are driven by terrorism, criminality, and competition over land and resources, not by religion,” Idris stated, adding that Nigeria remains a secular state where freedom of worship is constitutionally guaranteed. They argue that what is happening amounts to killings of farmers by violent herdsmen who graze cattle on farmlands and attack those who resist. He insisted that both Christian and Muslim clerics have fallen victim to banditry and terrorism, stressing that security agencies are working to free abductees and bring perpetrators to justice. Christian groups in Nigeria and abroad have also taken their concerns to foreign parliaments, alleging failure by authorities to protect vulnerable communities.
