News / Nationalby Staff reporterZimbabwe recorded robust growth in electricity generation during the second quarter of 2025, with figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) showing both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year increases.The newly published Index of Electricity Generation (IEG) indicated that production reached 114.6 in Q2, up 18.2 percent from 97.0 in the first quarter. Compared to the same period in 2024, when the index stood at 102.6, this represents an 11.7 percent year-on-year rise.Hwange Power Station remained the country's largest contributor, generating 1,945.6GWh or 68.1 percent of total output during the quarter. Kariba Power Station added 786.4GWh, representing 27.5 percent, while Independent Power Producers (IPPs) accounted for the remaining 4.4 percent.Despite the growth in domestic generation, electricity imports declined by 14.3 percent to 261.7GWh, down from 305.5GWh in the first quarter. Of these imports, 48 percent came from HCB (Mozambique), while DAM (SAPP) and EDM (Mozambique) supplied 22 percent and 12 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, electricity exports fell by 24.6 percent to 266.7GWh, with CEC receiving 150.1GWh (63.6%) and Namibia's NamPower taking 47.5GWh (20.1%).Distribution of electricity also rose notably, reaching 2,150.7GWh in Q2, up 10.9 percent from 1,938.5GWh in Q1.
