Splitsville goes to excruciating efforts to tell us that this is not fine, and that its female characters are important. Perspective changes involve Julie as much as they involve Paul, and both women are central to the film’s conclusion. Splitsville is thus strongest if we look at it cynically: “this is how men behave when their property is threatened”. The Splitsville marketing team, perhaps noticing this issue, are now shellacking the movie with that very cynicism: the tagline is “An un-romantic comedy”. The clean up job, that being the tagline “an un-romantic comedy” serves two purposes.
