Mao, a Shanghai-born U.S. citizen based in Atlanta, was visiting China for business when the travel restriction was imposed earlier this year.
She was required to cooperate with Chinese authorities as part of an ongoing investigation, according to Chinese officials.
Wells Fargo confirmed that Mao had returned to the United States but declined to offer additional comment.
Mao has been with Wells Fargo since 2012 and was recently elected chairwoman of FCI, a global trade financing association.
Wells Fargo continues to operate two Asia-Pacific hubs in Hong Kong and Singapore and maintains regional offices in Tokyo, Taipei and Seoul.
