MPs concluded the system is failing to provide 'a robust, risk-based regime of inspections' to stop potentially infected food entering the country. They warned the current approach places 'excessive burdens on law-abiding businesses and local authorities' while creating 'incentives and opportunities for criminals'. The committee said banned products are still entering the UK unchecked, and that Defra lacks 'an effective system of oversight'.
