The Boston Red Sox rookie had been excellent in his first two starts, allowing just one earned run in 10 1/3 innings. Early then struck out Brandon Lowe to ease some of the pressure, but a double and a throwing error later, and the Rays jumped ahead of the Red Sox, 3-0. Over the next three innings, he faced the minimum and kept the Red Sox in the game, a testament to his mentality. The Red Sox fought back, but the bullpen failed to keep the Rays’ lead at one in the eighth inning. With the Red Sox clinging to a Wild Card spot by one game, he might be asked to pitch in relief as well, if the team needs additional innings.
