On September 8–9, 2025, when the movement’s main vessel, the “Family Boat,” was reportedly struck by what organizers claim was a drone while docked at the port of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia. The Sumud Flotilla is a large, multinational civil society initiative launched in 2025 to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza by sea. The flotilla was organized by a coalition of activist groups—including the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Global Movement to Gaza, and Maghreb Sumud Flotilla—alongside many humanitarians, physicians, artists, legal experts, clergy, and seafarers from over 44 countries.globalsumudflotilla+4The initiative emerged in July 2025 as a response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and blockade in Gaza. More than 50 vessels carrying hundreds of activists from across the globe set sail from multiple ports, including Malaysia, Genoa, Barcelona, Catania, Syros, and Tunis, with the intention to converge on Gaza. The fleet carries approximately 300 tons of essential supplies such as food, water, and medicine.
