Despite making up the largest proportion of fatalities, deaths among drivers and passengers of cars fell by 5% last year. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is concerned that “progress on road safety has stalled”. In the council area of Somerset - which excludes Bristol, North Somerset, and Bath and North East Somerset - there were 25 fatalities last year, more than anywhere else in the South West, with the exception of Devon (27 fatalities). That’s more road deaths than in Bristol (seven), North Somerset (four), and Bath and North East Somerset (three) combined. It is essential that the upcoming national road safety strategy contains the measures and resources needed to prevent road traffic collisions.
