Returning refugees risk being displacedNAIROBI, 6 Dec 2005 (IRIN) - Tens of thousands of refugees in the Great Lakes region have started returning home, but without adequate support they could reignite conflicts and end up joining the millions of people displaced within their own countries, a senior UN official said on Tuesday. He said there were currently only three million refugees in all of Africa - but over 11 million IDPs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda and Sudan. People who have been internally displaced face the same problems as refugees when they try to return to their communities, McNamara said. Some three million IDPs in Angola, Burundi, Liberia and south Sudan have gone home in the past year. "One of the issues they face is land," McNamara said.
