WALLKILL, N.Y. — The pilot of a plane that crashed at Kobelt Airport in the Shawangunk hamlet has been identified, according to information from New York state police.
Police said Sunday morning that Gerald Cotter, 80, of Milford, New Jersey, was the pilot of the small-engine plane that crashed while attempting to take off from the privately-owned airport at around 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the plane caught fire after crashing, sparking a brush fire nearby.
Cotter was the only person on board the aircraft, and was found deceased at the scene.
The FAA has been notified, and the investigation is ongoing.
