More immediate support for textile recycling is urgently needed alongside industry-backed proposals to implement a sector-wide extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme, the Textile Recycling Association (TRA) argues. The calls have been made in response to the publication this week of a new blueprint strategy that outlines a detailed ten step plan aiming to enshrine a national textiles EPR initiative into law. The blueprint was published by Environmental NGO WRAP with support from multiple trade bodies that are members of the voluntary UK Textiles Pact. TRA chief executive Alan Wheeler said the proposals in the blueprint were an important industry intervention to build on wider calls arguing the case for introducing EPR reforms. Such support was seen as a critical step to uphold an ensure and safeguard existing recycling infrastructure while the mandatory EPR is introduced into law.
