The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Government of the United States (U.S.) have announced the establishment of a U.S.-AUC Strategic Infrastructure and Investment Working Group (SIWG). The announcement was made on 28 January at a meeting between the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. According to a statement, the SIWG will be established to promote and advance U.S.-Africa economic partnerships that create jobs, prosperity and economic security both in America and across Africa. The statement explained the establishment of the Group was influenced by both the AU and U.S. commitment to protecting peace and security on the continent. It views the development of high-quality, trade-enabling infrastructure as a critical next step in advancing growth, in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and its flagship priorities like the Programme for Infrastructure Development on Africa, and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
