Troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, under joint task force south east Operation UDO KA, have rescued a kidnapped clergyman in Enugu state. The victim, Johnson Anayo Onugwu, was abducted from his residence in Ezimo community, Udenu local government area, at about 1am on January 29, 2026. Troops of 82 Division Garrison deployed at Udenu trailed the kidnappers to the Itabolo general area and engaged them at Okpakeke community. The army said a fierce gun battle ensued during which one of the suspected kidnappers was neutralised, leading to the successful rescue of the clergyman. The army said it remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to deny criminal elements freedom of action within the joint task force area of responsibility.
