Scotland’s energy minister Gillian Martin has urged the UK government to make a decision on Ming Yang’s proposed turbine factory near Inverness “sooner rather than later”. Martin also urged the UK government to introduce reforms to future renewable energy auctions to ensure Scottish offshore wind projects have a “level playing field”. Many Scottish developers see the involvement of Ming Yang as crucial to achieving the country’s offshore wind goals due to the significant cost advantages and pace of innovation. The announcement replaces the Scottish government’s previous offshore wind capacity ambition of between 8-11 GW by 2030, which was announced in 2020. Transmission charges have emerged as a key point of contention among Scottish offshore wind developers following the AR7 contracts for difference (CfD) round.
