A Luzerne County jury on Wednesday delivered a $7.8 million verdict in favor of the estate of a Bloomsburg University student who died in a fall after being hazed during an alcohol-fueled fraternity party. According to a lawsuit filed by the Philadelphia law firm Kline & Specter, King was “plied with alcohol” as part of his fraternity initiation and became heavily intoxicated. Post-mortem testing revealed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.22%, or nearly three times the legal limit for driving. The jury determined that the Bloomsburg chapters of Kappa Sigma fraternity and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, which hosted the party, were each 35% responsible for King’s death. In a statement issued following the verdict, attorneys with Kline & Specter said they felt the verdict sent a message.
