American fly tyers, most notably William Scripture Jr., an Adirondack lawyer, later popularized bucktail streamers in the 1930s and 1940s. One of the most popular and well-known North Country bucktails is the Mickey Finn. That same year Gregory Clark of the Toronto Star reportedly renamed the fly the “Mickey Finn” after the infamous spiked drink. The Mickey Finn is an attractor pattern, rather than a direct imitation of any single baitfish species. I find most of my Mickey Finn use comes in the fall while pre-spawn brown and brook trout along with landlocked salmon become especially aggressive.
