Heavy rainfall caused major flooding in the city of Ksar El Kebir, 160 kilometers north of Rabat in northern Morocco, on Thursday, as water levels in the Loukkos River rose and inundated nearby neighborhoods. Regional officials in the province of Larache told Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) that emergency efforts are ongoing to protect threatened neighborhoods. Temporary protective barriers have been installed to prevent overflow from reaching more homes, as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property. Authorities had previously raised the alert to the highest level in the Larache area as river levels continued to rise. The flooding comes amid an unusually wet season in Morocco after years of drought.
