Lambeth Council is still exceeding World Health Organisation guidelines for fine particulate pollution (PM2.5), despite recording significant improvements in air quality in parts of the borough, according to a new Air Quality Action Plan due to be discussed at Cabinet on 2nd February. The Lambeth Air Quality Action Plan 2026–2028 acknowledges that while progress has been made, particularly in reducing nitrogen dioxide levels, air pollution remains a serious public health issue with deadly consequences for residents. It estimates that more than 100 Lambeth residents die prematurely each year as a result of air pollution, with over 750 emergency hospital admissions annually linked to heart and lung disease. The report identifies road traffic as the single biggest source of air pollution in Lambeth, and much of the proposed action plan is focused on reducing emissions from vehicles. The Cabinet discussion on 2nd February will ask councillors to approve the new action plan, setting the direction of Lambeth’s air quality work through to 2028.
