One of Butte’s most ferocious bulldogs for a full cleanup of the nation’s largest Superfund site passed away this week. A true son of Butte, Daily had been raised under the canopy of the Anaconda Company, which controlled most facets of life in Butte and nearby Anaconda for a century. It was clear that a full Superfund cleanup was their only hope for Butte’s future. Well, consider that in 1985 Montana’s Sen. Max Baucus tried to amend the Superfund law to exempt mining waste. Baucus parroted the mining industry’s line that mining waste was “high volume, low toxicity” — and shouldn’t be covered by Superfund.
