React Engineering, a project management and engineering consultancy, has relocated to the Flax Works in Cleator, the former Kangol Factory, following an 18-month renovation of the historic West Cumbrian building. Originally constructed as a flax mill in the 1830s, the site later became home to the iconic Kangol hat brand before falling into disrepair after its closure in 2009. Phil Redfern, managing director of React Engineering, said: "Genr8 North have done a fantastic job of creating modern, spacious offices, while respecting the iconic nature of this building and its importance in West Cumbria’s industrial history. React collaborated with Carlisle-based developer Genr8 North to convert the building into open-plan offices for its 60 employees. React will be joined at the revitalised site by project management firm Prima Uno and quantity surveyor recruitment specialist Clearnorth.
