The forecaster deemed the area to be a level ten on its air pollution scale, meaning "very high". A level ten is the highest possible rating, and is applied to anywhere where PM2.5 levels are above an average of 71µg/m³ over a 24 hour period. The Air Quality Standards Regulations 2010 require annual PM2.5 levels in the UK to be maintained at an average of 20 µg/m3.
