A successful buddy cop movie requires a certain finesse, a persistent air of absurdity and brotherhood or, in the case of “The Wrecking Crew,” the Hawaiian-themed action comedy released Jan. 28, brotherly vitriol. “The Wrecking Crew” follows brothers James (Dave Bautista) and Jonny (Jason Momoa) as they investigate the gang-related murder of their father and combat the frigid winter with a healthy dose of Hawaiian heat. Additional conflict builds up between James, a straight-laced Navy Seal, and Jonny, an unemployed, alcoholic ex-cop. That is to say, “The Wrecking Crew” is essentially a beefed-up pastiche of a “Hawaii Five-0” episode, rife with a hearty mix of family drama, beautiful scenery and testosterone-fueled leading men with tragic pasts. “The Wrecking Crew” might not be groundbreaking, but it doesn’t have to be.
