In 2009, he was placed first in London in celebrity chef Gary Rhodes’ TV competition Local Food Heroes, finishing third nationally. The pull of home eventually led Mr Lingard to sell his award-winning London restaurant, Simplicity, in 2025. Mr Lingard is also passionate about promoting British brewing heritage, and all draught beers at The Clarence are selected locally. For Mr Lingard, reopening The Clarence is about more than business.
