The horses, Shara and Togs, were born and raised at Marwell Zoo and are Przewalski’s horses, a rare species once declared extinct in the wild. Shara and Togs will first travel to Berlin before joining a group of horses set for release in Kazakhstan. The reintroduction is part of the Return of the Wild Horses project, led by Prague Zoo in partnership with European organisations including Tierpark Berlin, the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan, and the Frankfurt Zoological Society. Historically, Przewalski’s horses roamed the Russian Steppes, as well as parts of Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and northern China.
