As soon as I heard the UK Supreme Court ruling given the legal definition of a woman in April 2025, I immediately thought of Lily and her friends whom I had met the previous year. Understandably, there was genuine concern, as a few of our Norfolk WIs have members who are transgender. But understandably many of our members are unhappy with this decision, particularly come April when subscriptions are due and WIs will not be allowed to renew membership for transgender members. As a WI Adviser, I’ve always felt passionately that WIs should always offer a welcoming and friendly environment for their members. WI can be a lifeline for many, and I personally feel we are closing our doors to a group of women who really needed our friendship and understanding.
