The small sundakkai, also known as Turkey berry, which is commonly used in dishes like vathal kuzhambu, is now creating new income opportunities for farmers in Krishnagiri district. The demand for Turkey berry is also growing in nearby states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. Farmers say the berry is popular because it is healthy and has many medicinal benefits. Many farmers grow Turkey berry as an intercrop along with spinach, coriander and other vegetables. Compared to some other crops, Turkey berry farming costs less but brings better returns.
