The Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has cautioned residents against attacking, intimidating or hindering its enforcement officers in the course of carrying out their statutory responsibilities across the state. Speaking on the matter, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, explained that enforcement officers are deployed to protect public health, enforce compliance with waste management regulations and ensure a cleaner environment for residents. Gbadegesin noted that all enforcement operations are backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, which authorises the agency to sanction environmental violations and provides legal protection for officers performing their duties. He added that individuals or groups found assaulting enforcement officers or disrupting lawful operations would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. “LAWMA remains steadfast in its mission to deliver a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city for all Lagos residents,” he said.
