But now, there’s a legal victory for lawful refugees detained by federal agents. In a ruling handed down Wednesday, Federal Judge John Tunheim ordered the immediate release of lawful refugees detained by immigration enforcement in Minnesota. “The judge was very clear,” adds Madeline Lohman, with Advocates for Human Rights, a non-profit that provides legal help to refugees. Lohman estimates there are between 100 and 250 lawful refugees detained in Minnesota, and now in federal custody. It also says ICE must stop arresting lawful refugees — people who’ve applied for admission to the U.S. from their home countries, who experts say, have already been vetted.
