All of Melbourne's 44 public housing towers are slated to be torn down and redeveloped by 2051 under a controversial Victorian government plan unveiled in September 2023. Productivity Commission data released on Thursday showed there were 23,500 fewer public housing dwellings across the country in 2025 compared to 2016. In net terms, Victoria added 36 public housing and 5389 community housing dwellings over that span. Victorian Greens housing spokesperson Gabrielle de Vietri accused Labor of "abandoning" public housing and pointe Dekker said.
