The Bud Werner Memorial Library will host a free screening of the acclaimed documentary “Sugarcane” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in Library Hall, followed by a discussion with filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat, according to a Thursday news release. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary, explores a community’s investigation into abuse and deaths at a Native American residential school. Through personal stories and powerful imagery, “Sugarcane” examines the intergenerational trauma of Native families while highlighting their resilience and enduring strength. Noisecat, who co-directed the film, will join the audience after the screening for a Q&A about the project’s creation and its broader cultural themes. The screening is part of the library’s One Book Steamboat series, which this winter centers on learning from and listening to Native voices.
