The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) is refuting allegations that it has mistreated suspects in custody while insisting that it conducts all operations according to applicable laws and established Unit protocols. In a release yesterday, CANU noted the public statements made by individuals following recent encounters with the Unit. It did not identify the statements. CANU said that although it respects the right of all persons to raise concerns through lawful and appropriate channels, it finds it necessary to place facts on record in the interest of “accuracy, transparency, and the maintenance of public confidence.”Further, the recent statements containing the allegations were described “as misleading and malicious, intended to undermine the Unit’s credibility and deter officers from performing their lawful duties.”
