Yesterday’s meeting followed a formal request from WIN, dated 14th of January 2026, to the Chairperson and was at a time when there was no Opposition Leader. He also expressed the view that WIN’s mandate is undermined if the opposition side of the Commission does not reflect the actual parliamentary majority among opposition parties. The Opposition Leader emphasised that while Commissioners enjoy constitutional tenure and remain in office until lawfully replaced, the legitimacy of their appointment must be tied to the evolving configuration of Parliament. He hopes that the current commissioners will resign in good faith, given the current parliamentary composition of the opposition. He said that this is not the first time that an Opposition Leader wanted him removed, and he referred to 2007 when then PNCR Leader Robert Corbin was appointed Leader of the Opposition and thought that he should be removed.
