Wonder Man, which debuted on Jan. 27, can’t really be called a superhero project. Instead of the classic Marvel superhero, Wonder Man presents us with Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor looking for his big break in Los Angeles. In Wonder Man, Slattery deceptively befriends Williams for the U.S. government, but this time around, audiences perceive Slattery through a more revealing lens. The two are both auditioning for the lead role in a reboot of Wonder Man, Williams’ favorite childhood film that originally sparked his desire to start acting. The original Wonder Man film that they discuss throughout the series is an homage to the hero, also named Wonder Man, that comic book fans will be familiar with.
