Zimbabwe’s Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, has issued a renewed warning against Sabhuku deals, saying the government will not tolerate the illegal occupation or sale of land. He cautioned that those who participate in Sabhuku deals risk losing both their money and any claim to government assistance. Mr Garwe also sought to clarify government policy on land regularisation, saying it was often misunderstood. According to the minister, Sabhuku deals have contributed to widespread fraud, disputes and unplanned settlements, placing pressure on local authorities and public services. He warned that the era of settling on land without payment for land or services was over and that unauthorised settlements would not be recognised.
