Over the last decade the conservative call for women to come to their senses and embrace “traditional roles” has gotten louder. Surveys show that 37% of Republican women believe women should return to traditional roles, up from 23% in 2022, while support among Republican men and the Christian right is over 76%. Many conservatives today advocate this “complementarian” view — that men and women have distinct, biologically and divinely ordained functions. Charlie Kirk of the far-right organization Turning Point USA believed that women should not work at all, the better to serve their husbands and raise children. Given this, we can only assume that the actual plan is to achieve traditional roles for women under our current economic conditions.
