Luxembourg’s former European Commissioner, Nicolas Schmit, has taken up a new role with a Brussels think tank after losing his post as the country’s envoy in 2024. Schmit, who was Luxembourg’s labour minister for almost a decade from 2009, told the Luxemburger Wort it is "a great honour" for him to be able to lead the foundation in the future. The position is unpaid, and Schmit said he intends to fulfil it "on a voluntary basis, but with dedication". The foundation is largely funded by the European Parliament, which also financially supports similar institutions affiliated to other parties in the parliament.
