Another federal government shutdown is looming this week, this time over funding for the Trump administration’s immigration efforts. On Thursday, Senate Democrats and eight Republicans blocked a government funding package that needs to pass by midnight Saturday to avoid a shutdown by a vote of 45-55. But, if the government shuts down again, SNAP should be safe, according to the Department of Agriculture. In the deal to end the last shutdown, Congress passed annual appropriations for that fully funded SNAP through September. During the November shutdown, the Alabama Department of Human Resources, which administers SNAP in the state, said the program was “vitally important” to the Alabamians who rely on it.
