Of the 51 high school athletic associations representing 19,943 high schools in the National Federation of State High School Associations, only eight hold separate postseason tournaments for public and private schools. Public high schools compete in the University Interscholastic League while private schools belong to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. A few private schools that don’t fit within the constraints of private school leagues, are members of the UIL. Maryland public schools compete for championships in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association while private schools usually play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (for boys) and Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (for girls). Private schools occasionally play public schools during the regular season.
